Approach

Approach

I provide an integrative style of counselling which incorporates various styles of therapy to suit the situation and client. For example, at times I use approaches such as Person Centred, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Narrative, Solution Focused, Experiential or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

My main approach is Person Centred Counselling. You as the client are invited to take charge of your own wellbeing and together, we explore your own solutions, meanings, and ways forward. This approach is highly respectful and tends to be less clinical than other more directive approaches. I value deep listening in this process and hope to create the kind of space where clients can explore, express, heal and experience realisations about their own life and situations. In counselling clients often learn more about themselves and develop new strategies for coping, relating, and accepting.

Inclusion and Diversity

SAGE Counselling practice is inclusive and welcomes all people regardless of age, gender, disability, cultural background, indigenous background, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Definition of Counselling

The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) describe professional counselling as; a safe and confidential collaboration between qualified counsellors and clients. Counselling will promote mental health and wellbeing, enhance self-understanding, and resolve identified concerns. Clients are active participants in the counselling process at every stage. Counsellors can work with children, young people, adults, couples, families and groups. Counselling may be short term, long term, or over a lifetime, according to clients’ needs. Counsellors are fully present with their clients, using empathy and deep listening to establish positive working relationships. Counselling is effective when clients feel safe, understood, respected, and accepted without judgement. Counselling is a profession with a strong evidence base. Counsellors use empirically supported interventions and specialised interpersonal skills to facilitate change and empower clients.

For more information about what counselling is and is not, please go to the PACFA website for further definitions about counselling and therapy.
